Paradoxically, however, for years, control over the menstrual cycle <\/span><b>has been a lucrative source of income <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">in different sectors. This has recently been extended to the digital sector, where menstruation has become an area for the development of business models based on data about menstrual cycles and the fertility of menstruating women and menstruating individuals.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">In reality, these apps have <\/span><b>great potential to contribute to promoting health research and education<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. Therefore, through period tracking apps, we can find out the dates of our next period, the length of our cycles, the most and least fertile days, and even which are the most common symptoms we will experience at each stage of the cycle. This type of application is part of what is known as Femtech, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/03\/21\/investors-see-growth-opportunity-in-femtech-devoted-to-womens-health-.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">which has received more than a billion in investment in recent years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.\u00a0 But what do these apps do with all the information collected?<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">We have studied <\/span><b>the most used menstrual tracker apps in Spain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> to find out <\/span><b>which of them are the most respectful with users&#8217; privacy.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">This study <\/span><b>has been motivated by the recent events<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> that are taking place in the United States derived from the leak carried out by the media outlet Politico in May. They shared <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/05\/02\/supreme-court-abortion-draft-opinion-00029473\"><b>a draft from the Supreme Court is in favor of annulling the ruling of the Roe v. Wade case<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, <\/span><b>by which the right to abortion was legalized in the country in 1973<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. While countries like Colombia or Mexico have recently regulated this right, the United States seems to undo the steps taken towards the sovereignty of women over their bodies. In this sense, <\/span><b>the data collection about the menstrual cycle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> and, especially, the fact of sharing it with third parties, i<\/span><b>s especially dangerous, since it can be a way of accusing and persecuting those people who are considering this practice<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2022\/05\/31\/1052901\/anti-abortion-activists-are-collecting-the-data-theyll-need-for-prosecutions-post-roe\/?truid=&amp;utm_source=the_download&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=the_download.unpaid.engagement&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_content=05-31-2022&amp;mc_cid=c6290965dd&amp;mc_eid=e50688ab33\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">it is beginning to happen in the United States based on other types of data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Having in mind that the main service of menstrual tracker applications is based on a simple calendar, <\/span><b>it may seem that they are harmless<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, but the results of the analysis carried out indicate that <\/span><b>this idea is far from reality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h2><b>What do menstrual apps do with our data?<\/b><\/h2><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">We have analyzed 12 applications, among which <\/span><b>Period Calendar Period Tracker<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u00a0 (with more than 100 million downloads in Google Play Store) <\/span><b>Flo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> (more than 50 million) and <\/span><b>Clue<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> (more than 10 million) are among the <\/span><b>most widely used and well known<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">To evaluate them, <\/span><b>we have established 5 indicators<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">: if it has <\/span><b>an accessible privacy policy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, if that <\/span><b>policy is clear<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, if it asks for<\/span><b> invasive permissions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, if it <\/span><b>collects unnecessary personal data<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> and if <\/span><b>it shares this data with third parties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. In this way, they have been awarded with 2, 1 or 0 points depending on whether they act well, so-so or bad, respectively.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">One of the most surprising findings has been that <\/span><b>most of them fail at the last two indicators mentioned<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> (if they collect personal data and if they share it with third parties). Contrary to the innocuous appearance of their simple interfaces, <\/span><b>many of them share data with third parties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. They often do it <\/span><b>for commercial purposes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, other times without specifying the purpose and many of them only if the user agrees with her consent, but <\/span><b>are users really aware of what they are giving their consent for when they click &#8216;accept&#8217; the first time they open the app? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">These purposes are often found within the lines of lengthy privacy policies that almost no one ever reads completely.<\/span><\/p><p><b>To help users<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> to decide which application to opt for when tracking their menstrual cycle, we have prepared <\/span><b>this ranking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> based on our analysis:<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4708 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/eticasfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Period-Apps-Ranking_.png\" alt=\"femtech ranking\" width=\"5760\" height=\"3239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.eticasfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Period-Apps-Ranking_.png 5760w, https:\/\/dev.eticasfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Period-Apps-Ranking_-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/dev.eticasfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Period-Apps-Ranking_-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/dev.eticasfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Period-Apps-Ranking_-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/dev.eticasfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Period-Apps-Ranking_-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/dev.eticasfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Period-Apps-Ranking_-2048x1152.png 2048w, https:\/\/dev.eticasfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Period-Apps-Ranking_-18x10.png 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 5760px) 100vw, 5760px\" \/><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b>The average mark of respect for privacy of these apps is a scraped pass: 5.5<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. We have been surprised to see how some of them do not even have a privacy policy that the user can access, as is the case with <\/span><b>Menstrual Calendar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> (developed by SimpleInnovation) or <\/span><b>My Fitness <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">(by Xiaomi).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">It is also surprising how<\/span><b> only 1 of them, WomanLog <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">(developed by Pro Active App SIA), <\/span><b>does not sell or share data under any circumstances<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. About the rest, most of them share data with third parties <\/span><b>just for the sake of using the app<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, while others use consent and built-in third-party services to leave open the possibility that data is being shared in some way. They don\u2019t only share personal data, but <\/span><b>also information about the user&#8217;s health<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, such as the symptoms she experiences, as it happens with <\/span><b>Cycles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> (developed by Perigee), although, at leats, they say the share it anonymously.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">We end the study alarmed and confirming our worst suspicions about this type of digital service. Despite the historical neglect of menstruation as an object of study and treatment, its use as an excuse to exploit our personal data has not gone unnoticed. <\/span><b>Digitalisation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, instead of giving place to services that protect our privacy and focus on improving our sexual and reproductive health, <\/span><b>seems to have fostered<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> in period monitoring<\/span><b> a business model<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> in which a service is nothing more than the <\/span><b>bait to get hold of our data and monetise it<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.
